What do you want from the Otways?

Plan the road trip that fits your bases

High-intent Otway stops

Coast vs hinterland

The Great Ocean Road strip is not the same drive budget as Triplet and Hopetoun. Use our 2-day coast + hinterland plan to stop pretending they share a car park.

Maits Rest rainforest

Easy boardwalk rainforest west of Apollo Bay — perfect when you want Otway forest without a stair-day. See Maits Rest.

Start with these four

All trails

Erskine Falls

moderate

One of the Otways’ signature waterfall stops inland from Lorne: a sealed approach road, ferny gorge walls, and a high-impact cascade that rewards patience after rain — and careful footing on wet stairs.

Grade
Short drive + stairs to gorge
Time
30–90 minutes depending on how far you descend
Distance
Lookout short; lower viewing platform longer with stairs

Triplet Falls

moderate

A signature Otway rainforest waterfall circuit near Beech Forest: boardwalks, stairs, towering wet forest and the triple-cascade payoff that defines “Otways waterfall day” for many road-trippers.

Grade
Circuit walk with stairs and uneven forest floor
Time
About 1 hour typical; longer with photos and rest
Distance
About 2 km circuit (planning figure — verify on-site/official)

View guide →

Maits Rest

easy

An easy, high-reward temperate rainforest boardwalk west of Apollo Bay: mossy roots, tree ferns and a soft-underfoot loop that delivers “Otways rainforest” without a multi-hour commitment.

Grade
Boardwalk loop — excellent accessibility profile for mixed groups
Time
30–45 minutes at a calm pace
Distance
Short boardwalk circuit (about 800 m typical planning figure — verify)

Cape Otway Lightstation

easy

The historic lightstation on Cape Otway is a defining Great Ocean Road headland experience: ocean horizons, heritage buildings, and short coastal walks — separate commercial entry for the lightstation precinct, with surrounding park landscapes managed in the broader Otway coast system.

Grade
Drive access + short coastal walks; lighthouse visit is a paid attraction
Time
1.5–3 hours including lighthouse precinct time
Distance
Variable short walks around headland precinct

Common Great Otway questions

Short answers for planning. Official Parks Victoria track status, camping and fees always win over any blog — including this one.

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Is Great Otway National Park free to enter?

Day visitor entry is generally free according to publicly available Parks Victoria guidance, but camping, some facilities and commercial attractions (including Cape Otway Lightstation entry) have separate fees. Always confirm current rules on the official Great Otway National Park page before you travel.

Where should I stay — Lorne or Apollo Bay?

Match the base to tomorrow’s hero. Lorne suits Erskine Falls and eastern Great Ocean Road energy. Apollo Bay suits Maits Rest rainforest, Cape Otway Lightstation and many western logistics. Multi-base trips beat one exhausted loop covering the whole park from a single town.

Are waterfall stairs safe after rain?

Flow often looks best after rain — and traction is worst then. Otway timber stairs and leaf litter get slick. Use grip footwear, try upper lookouts first, and turn around if steps are streaming. A successful waterfall day can be a safe upper platform, not a forced lower descent.

How do I book camping in the Otways?

Book only through official Parks Victoria systems. This site never sells park camping or claims live availability. Town hotels in Lorne, Apollo Bay and nearby villages are separate commercial stays — see Where to stay.

How long from Melbourne to the Otways?

Roughly 2–2.5+ hours to Lorne and 3–3.5+ hours to Apollo Bay from the Melbourne CBD in ordinary conditions — more on summer weekends, public holidays and when lookout car parks are full. Build fatigue buffers for Great Ocean Road traffic and dusk wildlife.

Is this site official Parks Victoria?

No. This is an independent unofficial guide published by Farming Domains (Ian Piggott). For alerts, track status, camping and official rules use Parks Victoria and GORCAPA only.
