Park overview

Great Otway National Park is huge for a road-trip day. Most visitors sample a few bases rather than “doing the park.” Coastal strip along the Great Ocean Road meets cool temperate rainforest inland — plan bases, not just pins. Verify conditions on the official Parks Victoria park page and related coast authority pages (including GORCAPA).
Recommended order: pick a first-night base (usually Lorne or Apollo Bay) → choose one hero waterfall/boardwalk → check Parks Victoria alerts and wet-stair reality → add a soft secondary only if energy remains → hinterland Triplet/Hopetoun or Cape Otway as a separate half-day or second night, not a same-day stack from Melbourne.

Lorne & Erskine catchment
Best for: First GOR nights, waterfall day from a beach base, Melbourne long weekends
The classic eastern Great Ocean Road base for Great Otway National Park: beach-town energy, Erskine Falls inland, and a natural launch for Kennett River koala stops toward Apollo Bay.

Apollo Bay & western approaches
Best for: Cape Otway Lightstation, Maits Rest, Great Ocean Walk staging, multi-day GOR trips
The workhorse base for Cape Otway, Maits Rest and many Great Ocean Walk logistics — a practical coastal town with strong access into the park’s rainforest and headland experiences.

Cape Otway
Best for: Lighthouse visit, whale-season ocean scanning, headland walks, photography
The iconic headland of historic lightstation, ocean horizons and coastal heath — a must-plan stop for many Great Ocean Road travellers seeking more than beach lookouts alone.

Beech Forest hinterland & waterfall circuit
Best for: Waterfall circuits, rainforest photography, wet-weather days when tracks are open
The inland waterfall heartland for Triplet Falls and Hopetoun Falls — where Great Otway National Park feels deeply rainforest rather than coastal holiday strip.

Forrest & Lake Elizabeth
Best for: Multi-base road-trips, quieter forest time, Lake Elizabeth walks
A hinterland village base for mountain-bike culture and quieter forest walks including Lake Elizabeth — ideal when you want Otways without only doing the coastal highway loop.

Coast vs hinterland (the mental model)
Coast strip: lookouts, beaches, Kennett River wildlife pauses, Cape Otway headland access, and the driving rhythm of the Great Ocean Road itself. Services cluster in towns like Lorne and Apollo Bay.
Hinterland: Triplet Falls, Hopetoun Falls, Lake Elizabeth / Forrest and cooler forest circuits. These need real extra drive time, fuel discipline, and wet-track footwear after rain. Do not schedule them as “quick add-ons” after a full coastal day without looking at the map.
Access highlights
- From Melbourne: typically via Geelong and the Great Ocean Road (or mixed inland routes). Plan roughly 2–2.5+ hours to Lorne and 3–3.5+ hours to Apollo Bay in ordinary conditions — more on summer weekends and public holidays.
- First night patterns: Lorne for Erskine and eastern energy; Apollo Bay for Maits Rest, Cape Otway and western logistics.
- Camping: book only through official Parks Victoria systems. Town hotels are separate commercial stays — see Where to stay.
- Great Ocean Walk: multi-day coastal trail logistics — sample orientation on this site, full notes on Parks Victoria.
