Maits Rest rainforest walk
Guide updated · verify track status with Parks Victoria before you go
Area: Apollo Bay & western approaches
An easy, high-reward temperate rainforest boardwalk west of Apollo Bay: mossy roots, tree ferns and a soft-underfoot loop that delivers “Otways rainforest” without a multi-hour commitment.
- Boardwalk loop — excellent accessibility profile for mixed groups
- 30–45 minutes at a calm pace
- Short boardwalk circuit (about 800 m typical planning figure — verify)
- Effort: easy
- Best for: Otway rainforest without big stairs, families, wet-day nature fix, first rainforest taste

Where you start
Maits Rest car park (Great Ocean Road corridor west of Apollo Bay)
Signed boardwalk starting from the car park. Ideal when energy is low, weather is damp, or the group includes mixed mobility. Still a nature stop with real slip risk when wet — not a shopping-centre corridor.
How to get there
- From Apollo Bay: short drive west along the Great Ocean Road toward Cape Otway / Lavers Hill corridor — follow Maits Rest signs.
- Parking is limited relative to popularity on fine weekends — have a backup (Cape Otway Lightstation, town reset, or a later return).
- Do not invent verge parking that blocks the Great Ocean Road or emergency access.
- Pair logistics with Cape Otway the same day only if you still protect wind/time buffers for the headland.
How to do it (step by step)
- Stay on the boardwalk. Roots and soft soils off-track are fragile and hazardous.
- Walk quietly — this is a short nature immersion, not a fitness circuit.
- Supervise children on boardwalk edges and steps.
- Use the loop as a calm chapter: photos, listening, then back to the car without inventing a bush bash.
- If combining with Cape Otway, leave with enough daylight and energy for Lighthouse Road and headland wind.
Who this walk is for
Choose Maits Rest when you want rainforest texture without a stair-day: families, mixed mobility groups, wet-weather coastal days, and anyone resetting after a long Great Ocean Road drive.
It is not a wilderness expedition. Treat it as a premium short stop. If the group wants a full hinterland waterfall circuit, that is Triplet — budget inland driving separately.
Why Maits Rest punches above its distance
The boardwalk concentrates classic wet-forest textures — tree ferns, moss, root lattices — into a short loop that works for road-trip logistics.
Quiet behaviour, no off-boardwalk trampling, and realistic time so you still reach Cape Otway or Apollo Bay without night driving fatigue.
Pairing with Cape Otway
Classic western day: Maits Rest first (calm forest) then Cape Otway headland (wind and ocean scale). Reverse only if lightstation hours force it — still protect one quality chapter each.

Practical tips
- Perfect “reset walk” between Apollo Bay and Cape Otway on a multi-stop day.
- After heavy rain the forest smells incredible — but boardwalks can still be slick.
- Family win: celebrate the boardwalk as the hero; do not force stairs elsewhere the same hour.
