Day entry & park rules
Parks Victoria publishes visitor information for Great Otway National Park. Day visitor entry is commonly free — but that is not the whole story for a Great Ocean Road trip.
- Camping and some facilities attract fees and require official bookings.
- Cape Otway Lightstation entry is a separate commercial product — verify hours and prices with the operator.
- Pets are generally not allowed in national parks (assistance animals with published conditions only) — confirm on Parks Victoria.
- Stay on formed tracks and boardwalks; fragile rainforest and cliff environments do not recover quickly from shortcuts.
- Fire restrictions, temporary closures and road works appear on official channels — not in last year’s blog post.

Getting there
Most visitors approach via the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne (Geelong → Torquay corridor then west), or combine inland routes depending on the itinerary. Drive times are highly traffic-dependent: plan roughly 2–2.5+ hours to Lorne and 3–3.5+ hours to Apollo Bay from the Melbourne CBD in ordinary conditions — more on summer weekends and public holidays.
- Allow fatigue buffers — tourist traffic, narrow sections, wildlife at dusk.
- Weather can be fine on the beach and wet in the ranges on the same afternoon.
- Multi-base trips beat one exhausted loop trying to do Erskine + Triplet + Cape Otway + Apostles in a day.
Safety: wet tracks, cliffs, weather
Otway waterfall stairs and rainforest boardwalks are frequently wet and slick. Coastal headlands bring wind and cliff exposure. After storms, expect debris, temporary closures and muddy inland roads.
- Grip footwear over fashion sneakers on Erskine, Triplet and Hopetoun approaches.
- Turn around on streaming stairs — upper lookouts still count.
- Keep children close at platforms and cliff edges.
- Carry water, layers and a light if photo stops run late.
- Slow for wildlife at dusk on Otway roads.
- Read Parks Victoria safety guidance before remote or multi-day walks (including Great Ocean Walk sections).
Weather & seasons
Waterfalls often look strongest after rain (with worse traction). Summer brings peak Great Ocean Road crowds and booking pressure. Shoulder seasons can balance light and crowds. Cooler months attract whale-watching interest off Cape Otway — sightings are never guaranteed.

Is Great Otway National Park free to enter?
Day visitor entry is generally free per publicly available Parks Victoria guidance. Camping, some facilities and commercial products (including Cape Otway Lightstation) attract separate fees. Confirm current rules on the official park page before you travel.
How do I book camping in the Otways?
Use official Parks Victoria booking systems only. Peak periods book early. This site never sells park camping or shows live availability. When campgrounds are full, use commercial stays in Lorne, Apollo Bay or hinterland towns.
Lorne or Apollo Bay as a base?
Lorne for Erskine Falls and eastern Great Ocean Road days; Apollo Bay for Maits Rest, Cape Otway and many western logistics. Split nights when you can — the park is not one car park with every waterfall attached.
Are waterfall tracks safe after rain?
Flow often peaks after rain; traction drops. Wet timber stairs, leaf litter and clay are common. Grip shoes, upper lookouts first, and turn around if steps stream. Upper platforms still count as a successful stop.
How long from Melbourne?
