Apollo Bay & western approaches

The workhorse base for Cape Otway, Maits Rest and many Great Ocean Walk logistics — a practical coastal town with strong access into the park’s rainforest and headland experiences.

  • Best for: Cape Otway Lightstation, Maits Rest, Great Ocean Walk staging, multi-day GOR trips
  • Time: Full day for Cape Otway + Maits Rest; multi-day for GOW or hinterland loops
  • Further along the Great Ocean Road from Lorne; from Melbourne often 3–3.5+ hours depending on route and stops. Excellent overnight base for western Otway days.

Apollo Bay as the western Otway hub

If Lorne is the eastern welcome mat, Apollo Bay is where many visitors finally feel “inside” the Otway story: rainforest boardwalks, lighthouse headlands, and trailheads that support longer walks. It is less about one waterfall staircase and more about a cluster of high-intent stops.

Use Apollo Bay to reduce driving stress. Sleeping here before a Cape Otway morning beats leaving Melbourne at dawn and arriving already tired.

Rainforest + coast in one day

A realistic Apollo Bay day is Maits Rest + Cape Otway with food buffers — not Maits Rest + Triplet + Hopetoun + lighthouse + kennett koalas. Hinterland waterfall circuits often deserve their own day from a Beech Forest / Lavers Hill logic, or a multi-base itinerary.
