Full day from Apollo Bay
1-day: Apollo Bay rainforest + Cape Otway
Best for: Cape Otway lighthouse + Maits Rest rainforest in one coherent day
Bases: Apollo Bay · Cape Otway
Guide updated · verify Parks Victoria the morning you go
The definitive western Otway pairing: easy rainforest boardwalk at Maits Rest and the headland story at Cape Otway Lightstation — coast–rainforest contrast without hinterland waterfall stacking.
Drive logic: Apollo Bay → Maits Rest (short GOR west) → Cape Otway via Lighthouse Road (dedicated half-day block) → return Apollo Bay. Typical on-ground day with real driving buffers — not a five-minute loop.

This day answers two high-intent questions in one loop: “Otway rainforest walks” and “Cape Otway lighthouse.” It is intentionally not a Triplet Falls day. Hinterland waterfalls need their own map and energy budget.
Start early. Confirm lightstation hours and fees with the operator — that product is separate from free park wandering fantasies. Confirm Parks Victoria notes for boardwalks and any coastal walks you add.
Wind on the cape is frequently stronger than Apollo Bay foreshore. Pack a shell even if the café strip feels mild. Binoculars help more than phone zoom for whale-season ocean scans — sightings are never guaranteed.
If you only have a Melbourne day, this is usually the wrong primary. Sleep near Apollo Bay (or accept a thinner Lorne day) rather than racing Lighthouse Road on empty.
Track status, weather, parking and lightstation hours change — verify on Parks Victoria (and the lightstation operator where relevant) before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Night before
Tickets, weather, Plan B
Check lightstation open hours and fees. Plan A: Maits Rest + lightstation precinct. Plan B: Maits Rest + soft Apollo Bay coast if wind is brutal or the precinct is closed. Fuel and snacks ready so morning is not admin.
07:45–08:15
Apollo Bay departure
Fuel, water, snacks, offline notes. Check wind forecast for the cape and rain for the forest. Share a reverse clock if anyone is tired from yesterday’s drive.
08:30–09:45
Maits Rest rainforest walk
Boardwalk loop at a calm pace. Stay on the path. Soft photos, no rush. This is your rainforest chapter — protect it by not treating it as a five-minute tick before racing to the lighthouse.
10:00–13:00
Cape Otway Lightstation precinct
Drive Lighthouse Road carefully (wildlife, tourist traffic). Ticketed precinct time, headland views, optional short walks if wind allows. Whale-season ocean scan with patience — no cliff-edge hero shots. Hold children; secure hats.
13:00–14:30
Lunch buffer
Picnic or return toward Apollo Bay for food. Do not start a new hard walk on low blood sugar. Dry damp layers; fogged lenses are normal after rainforest humidity.
Afternoon
Optional soft add-on or rest
Town beach time, gear dry-out, or early night if driving toward Port Campbell / Twelve Apostles tomorrow. Skip “just one more waterfall” if fatigue is rising — that is how dusk wildlife hits happen.
Evening
Debrief
If you still want Triplet/Hopetoun, that is tomorrow’s hinterland plan with fuel and early start — not a midnight map fantasy.

Parking & access tips
- Maits Rest parking is limited relative to popularity — have a time buffer; do not invent verge parks.
- Cape Otway: use signed parks; watch for wildlife on exit at dusk.
- Never leave valuables visible at either stop.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Triplet Falls + Hopetoun full circuit the same day
- Lake Elizabeth “on the way” without a multi-base plan
- Long Great Ocean Walk sections after a full cape day
- Late departure that forces dusk driving on empty
Extra tips
Why this pairing works
- Maits Rest teaches wet forest; Cape Otway teaches ocean scale — same day, two climates.
- You avoid the classic trap of stacking eastern Erskine + western cape + hinterland falls into one exhausted loop.
Lightstation realism
- Entry fees and hours are operator products — verify before you commit Lighthouse Road.
- Wind can scrub outdoor time; buildings and barriers still make a strong visit if you came prepared.
