Great Otway National ParkUnofficial operator’s manual

2 days / 1–2 nights (multi-base ideal)

2-day: Coast icons + hinterland waterfalls

Best for: Road-trippers who want coast–rainforest contrast done properly

Bases: Lorne or Apollo Bay · Apollo Bay or hinterland approach

Day 1: coast and easy rainforest. Day 2: Triplet Falls + Hopetoun Falls hinterland circuit. The standout multi-base Great Otway plan with fatigue management built in.

Drive logic: Day 1 coastal/western icons (Maits Rest + Cape Otway or Lorne + Erskine). Day 2 inland Triplet + Hopetoun with full drive buffers. Avoid doing both days’ heroes in 12 hours.

This is the itinerary that makes Great Otway National Park click: you experience both the Great Ocean Road coastal story and the inland waterfall forest story without pretending they share a car park.

Sleeping closer to tomorrow’s trailheads beats heroic daily kilometre counts. A Lorne night then Apollo Bay night, or two nights west with a hinterland day, both work — pure Melbourne smash-and-grab does not.

Day 2 stairs punish Day 1 ego. Protect sleep, dry socks, and a real breakfast. After rain, Triplet boardwalks and roots get slick; leeches after wet periods are normal — long pants help more than panic.

Verify all track status with Parks Victoria each morning. Fire restrictions, temporary closures and road conditions change. This plan is a skeleton, not a live feed.

Track status, weather, parking and lightstation hours change — verify on Parks Victoria (and the lightstation operator where relevant) before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline

  1. Day 0 — Evening

    Arrive and choose coast primary

Check in near tomorrow’s hero. Fuel, groceries, offline maps. Say the two-day plan out loud so nobody invents Twelve Apostles as a secret Day 1 add-on.

  2. Day 1 — Morning

    Coast primary (pick one stack)

Option A (Apollo Bay base): Maits Rest then Cape Otway. Option B (Lorne base): Erskine Falls then optional Kennett River. Do not do A and B fully in one day. Upper lookouts first on wet stairs.

  3. Day 1 — Afternoon

    Town reset & early night

Dry gear, big dinner, short walk only. Protect sleep — Day 2 stairs punish tired legs. If relocating bases tonight, drive with daylight buffer and wildlife awareness.

  4. Day 2 — Morning

    Hinterland: Triplet Falls circuit

Drive inland with fuel and snacks (fewer cafés than the beach strip). Complete the Triplet circuit carefully on wet surfaces. Handrails where provided; formed track only. This is the rainforest waterfall centrepiece.

  5. Day 2 — Midday

    Hopetoun Falls short stop

Only if energy and weather allow. Short, high-impact photos. Kids inside barriers. Then decide whether to push west/east or return to base — do not invent a third hard walk.

  6. Day 2 — Afternoon

    Exit with daylight

If continuing the Great Ocean Road toward Port Campbell, leave with reserves. Tourist traffic and wildlife increase fatigue risk at dusk. If returning to Melbourne, start earlier than pride wants.

  7. Day 2 — Evening

    Debrief for the next trip

Note which base felt right. Many groups later add a Forrest / Lake Elizabeth quiet day once they stop treating the park as one car park.

Parking & access tips

  • Peak weekends: hit Triplet trailhead early.
  • Never leave valuables visible at any waterfall car park.
  • Hinterland approaches need fuel discipline — do not assume a bakery appears between trailheads.
  • If relocating bases, pack the car before the second hard walk so exit is clean.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Adding Twelve Apostles sunset as a mandatory Day 2 finish after full Triplet
  • Full Great Ocean Walk multi-day on the same weekend without recovery
  • Forrest + Lake Elizabeth unless you have a third day
  • Day 1 coast stack that already includes Erskine + Maits + Cape

Extra tips

Multi-base logic

  • Sleep closer to tomorrow’s trailheads — that is the Otways’ unfair advantage over one exhausted loop.
  • Park camping is official Parks Victoria only; town hotels are separate commercial stays.

Day 2 wet-forest rules

  • Boardwalks and roots get slick after rain — slow is competent.
  • One excellent Triplet circuit beats two half-finished waterfall dashes.
