Guide updated · grades and open status change — verify Parks Victoria
Great Otway walking is mostly a drive + short-to-moderate walk story for day visitors: sealed approaches to waterfall car parks, boardwalk rainforest, and headland precincts. The Great Ocean Walk is the serious multi-day exception. Metrics below are planning figures only — confirm on Parks Victoria.

Quick comparison (planning only)
Name, effort and base town — use this to stop stacking coast and hinterland heroes into one fantasy loop.
| Walk / waterfall | Effort | Time | Base |
|---|---|---|---|
| Erskine Falls | moderate | 30–90 minutes depending on how far you descend | Lorne |
| Triplet Falls | moderate | About 1 hour typical; longer with photos and rest | Beech Forest |
| Hopetoun Falls | easy | 20–60 minutes | Beech Forest |
| Maits Rest | easy | 30–45 minutes at a calm pace | Apollo Bay |
| Cape Otway Lightstation | easy | 1.5–3 hours including lighthouse precinct time | Cape Otway |
| Kennett River koalas | easy | 20–60 minutes (plus drive time on the Great Ocean Road) | Lorne |
| Great Ocean Walk samples | hard | Day sections often 4–8+ hours; full walk multi-day | Apollo Bay |
| Lake Elizabeth | moderate | 1–2.5 hours typical for many visitors | Forrest |
How to choose a stop
- Lorne base: start with Erskine Falls; optional Kennett River koalas on the coast strip.
- Apollo Bay base: Maits Rest + Cape Otway Lightstation as a coherent rainforest–coast day.
- Hinterland day: Triplet Falls circuit, Hopetoun as add-on if energy remains — real drive time required.
- One hero rule: one primary walk plus a soft secondary beats four half-finished pins.
easy effort
Boardwalks, lookouts and short wildlife stops — still pack grip shoes after rain.

Trails FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
What is the best first waterfall in the Otways?
From a Lorne base, Erskine Falls is the natural high-intent stop. From Apollo Bay, many visitors pair Maits Rest rainforest with Cape Otway rather than forcing Triplet Falls into the same exhausted day. Match base to hero.
Are Erskine Falls stairs hard?
The upper lookout is accessible for many visitors; lower stairs add effort and get slick after rain. Turn around early if timber steps stream — upper platforms still count.
Can I do Triplet Falls as a quick add-on from the coast?
Not honestly. Triplet and Hopetoun need real hinterland drive time, fuel discipline and wet-track footwear. Plan them as a dedicated day or multi-base second day.
