1–2 days depending on light goals
Photography-focused: waterfalls, forest & headland
Best for: Photographers chasing soft light, flow and coast–forest contrast
Bases: Apollo Bay · Lorne
Guide updated · verify Parks Victoria the morning you go
A light-aware plan: rainforest waterfalls in soft conditions, Cape Otway for horizon drama, with packing geared to wet kit and safe footing.
Drive logic: Prioritise overcast/wet-forest light for Triplet/Hopetoun/Erskine; clearer windy light for Cape Otway. Do not rush golden hour across impossible distances.

The Otways reward photographers who accept that the best waterfall light is often the worst stair traction. Pack protection for cameras and ankles. Soft overcast is a gift for fern detail; it is not a gift for bare rock grip.
Ethics first: stay on formed paths, no trampling vegetation for a “unique” foreground, no inventing platforms beyond barriers. Access stays open when people behave.
Do not reorganise an entire Great Ocean Road itinerary around a single guaranteed whale or perfect rainbow. Build a day that works without luck, then take luck as a bonus chapter.
Verify track status and any temporary closures with Parks Victoria. Lightstation fees and hours are separate operator products.
Track status, weather, parking and lightstation hours change — verify on Parks Victoria (and the lightstation operator where relevant) before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Night before
Light plan + kit weatherproofing
Check forecast for hinterland vs coast. Charge batteries (cold and long exposures drain power). Pack rain covers, cloths, dry bags. Agree which waterfall cluster is primary so you do not drive across the park for conflicting light.
Dawn / soft morning
Rainforest waterfall block
Triplet and/or Hopetoun when based for hinterland access; Erskine when based in Lorne. Tripod only where safe and not blocking others. Slow on wet timber. Composition > collecting every named falls on the map.
Midday
Reset & kit dry
Humidity fogs lenses — build a dry-out pause. Eat properly. Review cards; delete obvious failures so evening is not admin hell.
Afternoon
Cape Otway headland (if in range)
Wind management for gear. Cliff safety over hero shots. Whale season: long lens patience, not drones where restricted. If wind is brutal, shoot from safer vantages and call it a strong day.
Golden hour / dusk
One exit composition, then leave
Pick one last safe viewpoint. Leave with daylight margin for wildlife on roads. Tired photographers in the dark are a rescue risk.
Packing
- Lens cloths + rain cover
- Grip trail shoes
- Headlamp
- Dry bag for bodies and batteries
- Spare batteries (cold drains power)
- Waterproof shell
- Compact binoculars (optional wildlife)
- Microfibre towels for wet kit
Parking & access tips
- Arrive early for popular falls car parks; late light exits need wildlife awareness.
- Do not block trailheads with tripod setups in the car park aisle.
- Cape Otway: signed parks only; wind can throw doors into adjacent vehicles — mind your swing.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Trying to shoot every named waterfall in the park in one morning
- Drone flights where restricted
- Cliff-edge compositions that require leaving formed areas
- Chasing sunset three destinations away after a full Triplet day
Extra tips
Light vs traction
- Soft forest light often arrives with wet stairs — protect ankles first.
- One excellent frame from a safe platform beats a risky scramble.
Ethics checklist
- Formed track only; no vegetation trampling for foregrounds.
- Share the lookout — do not monopolise the only safe railing with a full kit for 40 minutes.
