How to get there

2. Roads can be narrow and busy with tourist traffic — pull fully into signed parking only.
3. After Triplet, reassess energy before adding Hopetoun. A tired group on wet stairs is a preventable injury.
4. Never leave bags visible in the car park.

How to do it (step by step)

1. Walk the formed path to the main viewing area first.
2. Only descend stairs if conditions are safe and the group has grip footwear.
3. Keep the visit focused — this is a high-impact short stop, not a full-day trek.
4. Share the viewing area; do not monopolise the only safe railing for a long tripod session if others are waiting.
5. Return to the car and decide the next drive with daylight and fatigue in mind.

Who this stop is for

Choose Hopetoun when you want a high-impact curtain of water without a long circuit — especially as a second hinterland chapter after Triplet. It suits photographers and mixed groups who still have stair capacity.

If you only have energy for one hinterland stop, Triplet usually wins for “Otway rainforest waterfall day.” Hopetoun is the optional polish, not the whole paragraph.

Best as a pair with Triplet Falls

Most road-trippers should treat Triplet as the primary hinterland walk and Hopetoun as the optional short chapter when legs and weather still cooperate.

If stairs at Hopetoun look unsafe after rain, the upper approaches may still give you the day without a forced descent.

Photos without the scramble

Stay on formed paths and behind barriers. Soft overcast light after rain is excellent for long exposures — if you are set up safely and not blocking others.

Do not climb wet rock for a unique angle. The cost of a fall far exceeds the value of a social media frame.
